Note: Though I have continued to work on this website over the years, the client also adds smaller sections of content without my help, so the live site was not entirely built by me.
About the ProjectFamily Promise of Los Angeles (formerly Family Promise of the South Bay) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families seeking stable housing achieve sustainable independence through a community-based approach. As with many nonprofits, their website had been pieced together and maintained internally throughout the years by non-designer employees wearing multiple hats. Their website needed to look more polished so that they looked like an established and legitimate organization to potential donors. I helped the client clean up and reorganize the website, and have continued to work with them over the years to add new content as well as to create graphic design materials such as flyers, invitations, and social media content.
My ApproachOne of the main priorities of this project was to clean up the entire website to create visual consistency with the typography, color palette, and overall layout. Their national parent organization (Family Promise) had an established brand guide that was not being consistently followed, so we needed to rework the website to make it look like it belonged to the Family Promise family (so to speak 😉).
I worked with the team to figure out the structure of the website, consolidating pages and cleaning up the header navigation menu. I then rebuilt each of the pages on the website with a consistent look and feel, using similar layouts and styles. Knowing the website would probably continue to pass through many hands, I created a style guide for them to reference, establishing some basic design rules like which font sizes to use where, how buttons should look, and providing a few reusable section layouts.
We also wanted to make the website more emotionally compelling, so I added statistics showing the scale of homelessness, along with quotes, photos, and stories of families the organization has helped. I knew that this kind of storytelling would help donors see the human impact of their support, which would make them more likely to give.
The ResultThe redesigned site positions Family Promise of Los Angeles as a credible and established non-profit organization, while weaving in the stories and faces of the families they serve. There is now a solid design framework in place that the team can continue to use and build upon in the years to come.
The client was extremely happy with the new site, and I’ve continued to work with them on updates to their website and print design materials like flyers and invitations for their galas and other fundraising events.
