VIP Day: Web Design & Development

About the Project

The Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) is a global scientific and policy platform advancing the understanding, monitoring and protection of soil biodiversity. Their 100+ page website had been built on the older version of the Squarespace platform (version 7.0), and had passed through many hands over the years – meaning the overall site structure was a mess. The existing Scientific Director, Dr. Zoë Lindo, booked a VIP Day with me to convert the website to the latest version of Squarespace to make use of the much-easier-to-use fluid engine editor, as well as to clean up and consolidate the structure of the site and redesign some of the main pages.

My Approach

The Squarespace version update tool has a limit of 150 pages when converting a website from version 7.0 to version 7.1, and this website was well over the limit – so the first order of business was to clean up the backend page structure and remove unnecessary pages.

Once the website structure was much more organized and less overwhelming, I moved on to redesigning some of the main pages of the website, as well as cleaning up the header menu.

The Result

By the end of the day, GSBI had a clean, well-organized website with a streamlined page structure and a redesigned header menu making the site easier to navigate. Thanks to the update to Squarespace version 7.1, the GSBI team can now update content themselves using the much more user-friendly drag-and-drop editor.

Dr. Lindo came to me feeling overwhelmed by the state of the website, and left with a clean, manageable site that she’s comfortable updating herself.
